Effective as from last Friday 23rd October, all seat belt exemptions in the current form are cancelled as the authority to grant the exemptions have been done so by the incorrect department.

Legal advice to the Policy Department is that it may – repeat may, be possible to gain an exemption for children aged 4 to 7 to ride unrestrained in  vehicles travelling at 20kph or less. e.g., for the duration of a parade but NOT to and from the event.

John McLean and Peter Taylor advised DoT policy that will not work for the CMC and this will be the end of exemptions completely for children up to the age of 7 in all circumstances.

Children aged 7 to 16 may ride unrestrained in the front seat only if the rear seat is occupied by children of the same age. This has always been the case.
